I assist separated parents to decide the practical living arrangements that are in the best interests of their children by interviewing families, reading support material, making a considered assessment and formulating this into a detailed Family Report, including recommendations for the Court.
The focus of this assessment is:
- The best interests of the children
- Their attachments to each parent / significant carer
- The children’s emotional and psychological needs
In addition, the report process considers:
- Relationships between siblings
- History of care
- Capacity of each parent
- Age and developmental levels of each child
At all times, my objectives are to:
- Preserve important parent/child relationships
- Assess any risks to the children
- Reunite families or increase contact whenever possible and practicable and when in the interests of the children
- Improve conditions for the children
Reunification of parents and their children or rebuilding their relationships is my goal whenever that is safe and in the best interests of the children.
A comprehensive Family Report may be useful in mediating a family dispute in order to avoid litigation, or it may be necessary to aid the Court in making a decision. Either way, it is a chance for parents and children to have their voices heard and to speak about the issues they feel are relevant and important.
More details about the process can be found on this site, which also contains links to other useful resources. Please look at the Frequently Asked Questions page which provides information about many of the topics parents commonly inquire about. If, after perusing this information, you still have unanswered questions, please ask your lawyer or, if you are self-representing, you are welcome to email me directly on firstname.lastname@example.org
